Eyebrow serum without prostaglandin: what to look for on the label

Eyebrow Serum Without Prostaglandin: What to Look For on the Label

The front of the box tells you what a brand wants you to think. The back of the box tells you what is in the bottle. For brow serums, the back is where the answer lives.

Full ingredient list published on the page. Read it here

If you have landed here searching for an eyebrow serum without prostaglandin, you probably already know why you are asking. Maybe you have used a lash serum and had a reaction, maybe you have read something worrying, or maybe you simply prefer to know what you are applying near your eyes. Whatever the reason, this guide gives you a repeatable method for reading any brow serum label. Disclosure: Eastern Curlew sells BlinkBliss, one of the serums we use as an example, so weigh our opinion accordingly and trust the method more than us.

Step one: find the actual ingredient list

Reputable products list ingredients in full, usually in INCI format (the standard international naming system). If a brow serum shows only a marketing blurb, or a vague “proprietary growth complex”, treat that as a prompt to ask questions, not to buy. Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest concentration, apart from those below roughly one per cent, which can appear in any order.

Step two: scan for “prost”

Prostaglandin analogue ingredients tend to carry names containing “prost”, for example in the middle or at the end of the word. A quick scan of the list for those four letters is the simplest first filter. It is not foolproof, because naming can vary and you may see unfamiliar derivatives, so use it alongside the other steps rather than instead of them.

Tip: screenshot the ingredient list before you buy. If anything looks unfamiliar, search each unfamiliar name individually or ask the seller what it is for.

Step three: check what the page claims

There is a difference between a page that says “prostaglandin-free” and a page that simply does not mention it. Both can be legitimate, but they tell you different things. When the phrase is absent, the ingredient list is your evidence and the seller is your next source.

For example, our LashViva eyelash serum page describes the serum as prostaglandin-free, and so does our BlinkBliss eyebrow serum page. The published BlinkBliss ingredient list reads: Aqua, Hyaluronate, Pentylene Glycol, Panax Ginseng Extract, Swertia Japonica Extract, Pumpkin Seed Extract, Acorus Calamus Root Extract, Panthenol, Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract, Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1, Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Oligopeptide-10, Tocopherol and Biotin. Nothing on that list has a prostaglandin-analogue name, so you can check it for yourself. We would still rather you ask us than assume.

Step four: understand what you are looking at

Label signal What it may mean
Named peptides (for example Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1) A cosmetic peptide-based formula
Plant extracts, panthenol, tocopherol, biotin Conditioning and care ingredients
An ingredient with “prost” in the name A prostaglandin analogue; look up what it is before using it near your eyes
“Proprietary blend” with no breakdown You cannot verify the contents; ask the seller
No ingredient list at all Walk away

Step five: weigh up the claims

A good label and modest language usually go together. Be cautious of promises such as guaranteed results, dramatic change in days, or “clinically proven” with no study you can read. Brow growth is gradual and individual. We have written separately about why eyebrow serums sometimes seem to stall, and the honest answer is often patience and consistency.

Step six: think about your eyes

If your eyes are sensitive, the same label discipline applies to every product near them. Our guide to lash serums for sensitive eyes has a useful checklist that works just as well for brows. And if you are shopping for lashes as well, see the prostaglandin-free eyelash serum guide.

Patch test, then be patient

Test a small amount on your inner forearm, wait 24 hours, and only then try it near the brows. According to its product information, BlinkBliss is applied nightly at the base of the brows and extra applications do not increase growth. Stop and rinse with water if you notice irritation, and see a doctor if redness, swelling or eye discomfort persists. Speak to a doctor first if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you have an eye or skin condition. See a doctor too if brows are thinning suddenly or in patches.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my eyebrow serum has prostaglandin in it?

Read the full ingredient list and look for names containing “prost”. If the list is missing or vague, ask the seller in writing. Our guide above shows how.

Is there an eyebrow serum without prostaglandin in Australia?

Yes, peptide-based cosmetic brow serums exist. Check each product’s ingredient list and what the seller states. Ours, BlinkBliss, is described as prostaglandin-free on its product page and lists its ingredients publicly.

Does “natural” mean prostaglandin-free?

Not automatically. “Natural” is a marketing word and is not a substitute for reading the ingredient list.

Can I use a brow serum if I wear contact lenses?

Brow serums are applied away from the eye itself, but if you are unsure or have eye sensitivities, ask your optometrist or doctor.

What else helps brows besides a serum?

Gentler plucking, patience through the growth cycle, and good nutrition all matter. Our list of things that help and things that do not goes through them.
